Wiz Khalifa sentenced to nine months in prison in Romania after smoking cannabis at 2024 music festival

Wiz Khalifa was sentenced by a court in Romania on Thursday to nine months in jail for drug possession after taking part in a music festival last year in the Eastern European country.

The 38-year-old rapper - who has previously been open about smoking weed - had been stopped by Romanian police in July 2024 after allegedly smoking cannabis on stage at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti.

Prosecutors said the rapper - whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz - was found in possession of more than 18 grams of cannabis, and that he consumed some on stage.

The Constanta Court of Appeal handed down the sentence after Khalifa was convicted of "possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption," per Romania's national news agency, Agerpres.

The decision - which is final - came after a lower court in Constanta County in April issued Khalifa a criminal fine of 3,600 lei ($830) for "illegal possession of dangerous drugs," but prosecutors appealed the court's decision and sought a higher sentence.

Daily Mail has reached out to Khalifa's reps for comment, but did not immediately hear back.

Romania has some of the harsher drugs laws in Europe. Possession of cannabis for personal use is criminalized and can result in a prison sentence of between three months and two years, or a fine.

It isn't clear whether Romanian authorities will seek to file an extradition request, since Khalifa is a U.S. citizen and doesn't reside in Romania.

However, sources told TMZ Hip Hop that the rapper's team is 'in the process of appealing' the nine-month prison sentence.

Last year in July at the time of the incident, Khalifa had taken to X to share a statement and issue an apology.

'Last nights show was amazing. I didn't mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage.'

The performer continued, 'They were very respectful and let me go. I'll be back soon. But without a big a** joint next time.'

The music artist has yet to address the recent prison sentence, but recently took to his Instagram stories on Thursday to repost a clip as he smoked on a stream.

Text added towards the top of the video read: 'He made this live on twitch,' followed by a surprised face emoji.

The music artist has been open about his use of cannabis in the past and admitted last year that he attends his son's parent-teacher conferences while high.

During an episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, the performer also shared that teachers 'expect' him to be high while attending academic conferences.

Khalifa shares son Sebastian, 12, with ex-wife Amber Rose - whom he was married to from 2013 until their divorce was finalized in 2016.

'Hell yeah. I'm pulling up stoned. They expect it,' the rapper expressed while adding that the teachers 'know what's up.'

The star continued, 'It's not like back in the day [where] you're considered a bad parent if you smoke weed.'

Khalifa also said that he was 'pretty sure' his son most likely 'smells like weed' due to the rapper smoking cannabis.

'I don't know because I can't smell it but I'm pretty sure he smells like pot,' the performer added.

He then explained, 'And yeah I'm pulling up stoned, I'm pulling up high because I want them to connect with the real me.'

Elsewhere during the podcast episode, the rapper got candid about his co-parenting relationship with Amber Rose.

'It's good. It's fun. Well not fun, but like, I think I'm in a good situation with her as a co-parent,' he said.
